Windows 8.1 will end in 2023.

If someone is still using Windows 8.1 as the operating system on their PC or laptop, it is time to upgrade it. Microsoft has announced that the last update for Windows 8.1 will be released on January 10, 2023. The company has stated that it has already started notifying Windows 8.1 users about the end of this support.

Below is the notification received in that way. It seems that there are three options to learn more about this update, to be notified later, or to be reminded when support stops. This notice is not a "hard" notice like the notices given when support for previous operating systems was discontinued. It is special that there is an option like do not notify until January 10, and you can arrange to see this notification once a month with an option like "Remind me later".

Since there are already a very small number of Windows 8.1 users, it seems that Microsoft is not ready to force this update as before. For example, before Windows XP and Windows 7 were discontinued, there were a large number of people using those operating systems. But like those operating systems, Windows 8 was not very popular, and with the free Windows 10 upgrade, the vast majority of Windows users started using Windows 10.

Will my Windows 8.1 computer stop working?

No. Support for Windows 8.1 will be discontinued, but the software will continue to function. However, after January 10, 2023, your computer running Windows 8.1 will no longer receive security updates. In addition, Microsoft customer service will no longer be available to provide Windows 8.1 technical support.

Are there free option to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 ?

There are currently no free upgrade paths from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 or Windows 11, but you can upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free.
